Pusha T discusses recording with Kanye, his decision to push back his G.O.O.D. Music solo project, and the current state of The Clipse.
Lord Willin’, the debut album from Clipse, is heralded as one of the greatest street-talk albums of all time, but ten years after the album’s release Pusha T is focused more on his solo projects, and as a result has teamed up with G.O.O.D. Music to create recent buzz. With a solo LP due out in early 2013, the Virginia rapper talked about why he has been delaying the release, the method of recording with Kanye and G.O.O.D. Music family, and the current status of The Clipse.
Although he is respected by a lot of the older heads, Pusha felt it was important to introduce himself to the new generation of hip hop listeners, and as a result has pushed back the release of his album. In an interview with Pitchfork, Pusha Ton says, “All of this is about timing and prepping the public. I feel like when people first heard my sound on G.O.O.D. Music, they were like,” continuing, “But I treated my progress like a totally new artist: I wanted to be on records, drop a mixtape, do virals, and go on the road for records that don’t really have a true body of work to attach themselves to. I want people to delve into what the hell I’m doing, the purity of the rap.
The Clipse rapper also touches on recording with Kanye and the formula ‘Ye uses, “[G.O.O.D. Music rappers] don’t do shit. We all get a skeleton, write verses, and then ‘Ye X’s motherfuckers out. [laughs] He X’s this guy out, edits that guy’s shit, and then we come back and there’s a song on top of a new beat. That’s how it works.”
The other half of The Clipse, No Malice (formerly just ‘Malice’) had found religion and stepped away from the rap game for a bit, and Pusha says he is open to recording an album, but it all lies on Malice. “The funny thing is, I didn’t even put the Clipse on the side— Malice did. I was actually ready to start a new album, and he was like, ‘I’m not doing another Clipse album right now.’” Pusha adds, “I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ And he was like, ‘Man, I’m gonna do my thing, but you wanted to do a solo album, so why don’t you go ahead?’” Fans can take solace that Pusha T added, “I definitely want to do another Clipse project.”
Do you guys think we will see another Clipse album anytime soon?
